DR. B.R. AMBEDKAR
“Religion is meant for human beings. Human beings are not meant to exist for religion.”
Ambedkar is not rejecting the idea of religion itself here. Rather, he is raising a fundamental question about what the purpose of religion should be.
Religion should guide people toward a better life.
It should nurture love and compassion.
It should create mutual respect among people.
It should offer comfort in times of suffering.
It should help people become better human beings.
In other words, the purpose of religion should be to elevate human life.
But sometimes, this relationship gets reversed.
People are divided in the name of religion.
Relationships are hurt for the sake of doctrines.
Human emotions are ignored for the sake of rituals.
The freedom to question is lost in the name of belief.
Religious identity becomes more important than the human being.
That is when Ambedkar’s question becomes especially important:
Does religion elevate the human being, or does the human being begin to lose their humanity for the sake of religion? If a belief makes us more loving, compassionate, honest, and responsible, then it adds meaning to human life.
But if that same belief causes us to look down on others, disregard the feelings of those closest to us, or place doctrine above humanity, then its purpose deserves serious reconsideration.
In Summary:
The greatness of a religion cannot be measured merely by its rituals. It should be measured by the humanity it creates.
A spirituality that does not make a person more loving, compassionate, just, and humane risks losing its most fundamental purpose.
